PÚPAN
“PROTECTION IN EVERY DIRECTION”
Púpan (Eng. Cacoon) Bus Stop is a design developed for Habitacola 2024, created specifically for locations with colder climates and unpredictable weather conditions.
Current State
Today, Akureyri features traditional bus shelters. These are typically single poles that contain simple bus route information or a metal structure covered with glass. This design is unwelcoming for habitants of Akureyri, lacking in both an aesthetically pleasing design as well as protection from harsh weather conditions.
The Solution
In a location where cars are the primary mode of transportation, this bus stop seeks to change the current norm by providing a reliable and convenient alternative. In the center of Akureyri, our bus stop is a symbol of comfort, sustainability and security for both locals using public transportation and visitors enjoying the views of Iceland while being protected from the weather.
User Experience
With its long, bright summers and dark, windy winters, the Akureyri bus stop is designed to survive the weather while offering passengers a place to feel warm and secure. In a town of just 18,000 residents, including families, students and adventurers. The bus stop serves as a vital link for locals and tourists navigating the dynamic weather conditions.
The idea is that each individual traveler will have their own rotating cocoon in order to achieve ultimate protection from wind, rain and snow.
